The opioid epidemic has been a complex and hard problem for researchers. They have struggled to understand the factors that lead to opioid abuse and identify overdose hot spots.
Now, they are exploring the use of AI to help solve this crisis. However, the healthcare industry can be slow to adopt new technology, which has consequences.
AI-fueled programs, such as Sobergrid, are developing the capacity to detect when individuals are at risk of relapsing — for example, based on their proximity to bars or drug buying locations — linking them to a recovery counselor or 24/7 AI support.
At Purdue University, researchers have developed and piloted a wearable device that can detect signs of overdose and automatically inject naloxone, an overdose-reversing agent. (Read More)
