š¬ AI's Memory Problem
Today we review research into what is being called 'catastrophic' forgetting and how researchers are trying to solve the problem

Happy Tuesday!
A better understanding of how our human brain makes memories could help us reduce AI neural networks' habit of what is being called 'catastrophic' forgetting.
Letās Review š

Researchers have identified a problem with AI systems known as "catastrophic forgetting," where the AI forgets old tasks when learning new ones. This can cause the AI to freeze and become non-responsive.
AI neural networks essentially mimic how the human brain works so there has long been an expectation that an algorithm can use its stored knowledge of executing all its old jobs to learn new ones -- but this just doesn't seem to be working as expected.
To address this issue, researchers have explored different approaches. One study used a biologically inspired solution by utilizing a "spiking" neural network, which mimics how the human brain works.
Another study from Ohio State University found that feeding the AI with very different tasks in succession, rather than similar tasks, improves its ability to remember. These solutions aim to improve AI's ability to learn, handle unexpected situations, and be scalable. (Read More)
