👀 AI is Working to Prevent Blindness

Researchers at Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO) have developed an AI system that has the potential to not only identify sight-threatening eye diseases but also predict general health, including heart attacks, stroke, and Parkinson’s disease.

RETFound is one of the first AI foundation models in healthcare, and the first in ophthalmology. The research team has recently published findings in Nature and is making the system open-source and freely available to use by any institution worldwide.

RETFound, was trained using a dataset of 1.6 million images from Moorfields Eye Hospital. It outperforms existing AI systems and works well in diverse populations.

The researchers believe it has the potential to be developed for many other eye diseases with the ultimate goal of the prevention of blindness. (Read More)

👽 NASA Will Soon Use AI for Research Into UAPs

NASA released a report on Thursday after a yearlong study into UAPs. The study suggests that new scientific techniques such as the use of AI are needed to study UAPs.

NASA hopes to reduce the stigma of UAP/UFO reporting by shifting the conversation to science. The study found no current evidence of extraterrestrial origin for the unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs).

The panel emphasized the importance of AI and machine learning in identifying rare occurrences like UAPs. The study relied on unclassified data and concluded that there were too few high-quality observations to draw scientific conclusions.

The study cost less than $100,000 and was conducted by a team of experts, including retired NASA astronaut Scott Kelly. (Read More)
